What is Repetitive Strain Injury?

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is caused by repetitive movement of a limb and overuse of muscles including the muscles of the hands, wrists, arms or shoulders.

RSI is a common complaint for employees. Some examples of the causes of RSI in the workplace include:

•    Use of a computer or workstation without proper seating or desk height
•    Repetitive factory work
•    Repetitive use of cleaning equipment
•    Dressmaking
•    Stress
•    Lack of exercise
•    Poor posture
•    Cold

The symptoms of RSI include:

•    pains or tenderness in muscles or joints
•    stiffness
•    throbbing
•    tingling or numbness
•    weakness
•    cramp

If left untreated, RSI can result in irreversible damage.

Repetitive strain injuries are very common in the workplace and it is estimated that the cost to UK industry is between £5 billion and £10 billion annually.

Employers are obliged to insure that measures are taken to protect works from RSI as much as possible under the Safety Act of 1974 and the Safety at Work Regulations, 1999.

If an employer fails to adhere to the law, they may leave the company open to prosecution or a claim for RSI compensation.

In August 2007 an RAF data input clerk sued the Ministry of Defence for a repetitive strain injury which affected her thumb and stopped her being able to work. She was awarded £484,000.
