It has been reported that the number of people being admitted to hospital for personal injuries caused as a result of dog attacks is on the increase.
According to data from the NHS Information Centre there were 6120 hospital admissions in 2010-2011 as a result of personal injuries caused by dogs. This is a 5% increase from the previous year and represents the most serious injuries requiring a stay in hospital , not just those cases seen in A&E.
Around 1010 (17%) of cases ending up in hospital involved a child under the age of 10 with dog related attacks accounting for about half of all of the 12,410 admissions caused by animals in 2010 - 11.
April 2011 saw the most cases relating to dog attacks of any month in the past two years with the North-West of England being the worst-affected region.
