A MAN who suffered personal injuries when police shot a dog dead outside his home says he is pursuing a claim for compensation.
The incident happened on the 24th November when two dogs, a Rottweiler and an American bulldog puppy, escaped from a neighbour’s home and bit a man. Police officers shot the 10 stone Rottweiler dead , saying he was dangerously out of control. Ivan Pearce, of Tatton Road in Crewe, was in the living room of his home at the time of the shooting and was hit in the neck by a ricochet.
The Crewe Chronicle has reported that Mr Pearce is seeking compensation for the injuries that he sustained in the incident and intends to consult a personal injury solicitor.
He told the newspaper “I don’t feel like I’ve had a lot of support from the police. All they did was board up the window and that was it.”
A police spokeswoman said: “We feel the report in last week’s paper underplayed the seriousness of the situation. The dog had hospitalised one member of the public and a police officer.
“Both were treated for serious wounds.Unarmed officers had tried to contain the dog while a police dog handler travelled to the scene. The dog began jumping up at members of the public, including children. Officers felt it as such a threat to the safety of the public that a senior officer gave authority to use firearms if necessary.
Crewe Neighbourhood Policing Unit’s Insp Andy Smith said: “It was unfortunate and understandably must have been a shocking experience for Mr Pearce. My team have been in contact with Mr Pearce to ensure that he gets the support and help he needs.
